Over 25 years ago a group of WELS seniors met to found the Organization of WELS Lutheran Seniors (OWLS) to provide a venue for providing a means for the seniors of the Church to serve their Lord and Savior in a faith-based setting. Since that time the group has grown to encompass about 1700 members at large or in over 70 area chapters. The local chapter at St. Peter, although presently inactive, is designated 49. The national organization is headquartered in New Ulm, Minnesota.
Throughout the years several programs have been sponsored and supported by the organization that are not a commitment of the WELS Synodical effort. Notable is the early Prison Ministry in which bibles are furnished to those incarcerated in prison. These gifts are then followed up with study pamphlets and testing programs to encourage bible study. The latest and present OWLS program is the support of a missionary to the European Civilian Chaplaincy, an activity that Synod was forced to abort because of curtailed finances. Presently, a set of printed material is being devised so that laypersons in local churches are able to assist the pastor in visitation of homebound members or area assisted living homes.
Annually, the OWLS hold a national convention in July at various midwestern hotels. In 2010 the site chosen is the Holiday Inn in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. If you wish to support this group or to attend the convention, information is available from Ron Wendland or Russell Ash or from the national headquarters at: OWLS, P. O. Box 84, New Ulm, MN 56073.
